ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management. The standard requires that the quality policy is documented and known to all employees.
ISO 9001 can be used to assess whether an organization is capable of meeting customer requirements, applicable laws and regulations for the product, and the organization's own requirements — with the aim of increasing customer satisfaction. Business processes must be demonstrably controlled.
An independent certification body conducts audits to verify this. If all requirements are met, a certificate is issued. The certificate is valid for three years, after which recertification takes place
