High-resistance metallisation
High-resistance metallisation (also called thermal spraying or galvanisation) is the thermal application (i.e. spraying) of liquid zinc, aluminium, or a combination of these, onto a metal surface that was previously blasted clean. A zinc wire is transported through the spray gun and heated by a flame. A layer of hot liquid metal is sprayed on the object to be conserved; the metal will solidify immediately to form a well-bonding layer.
The advantages include:
- can be applied as a duplex system whereby a wet varnish or powder-coat system is sprayed on afterwards
- alternative if an object cannot be galvanised because it is too large or otherwise inconveniently constructed
- extremely durable conservation system
